Learning in the living room

As area students go back to school this month, some never
have to leave the house. For the Gromer family of Nevada, it’s
simply a matter of moving from the kitchen to the living room.
Monday was the first day of school for the Gromers. Mary Beth,
13, Matthew, 10, Luke, 6, and Sarah, 4, are up by 7 a.m., Monday
through Friday. By 8:15, after chores and breakfast, school
begins with a half-hour of Bible devotions. From there, Alison
Gromer, 41, leads her children through various subjects, from
reading and writing to science and history. The school year ends
the Friday before Memorial Day. “Juggling the different hats I
wear is the biggest challenge I face,” says Gromer, who has a
bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education from
Southwest Missouri State University. “I’m a wife, a mother and a
homemaker. I have four children to teach at four different grade
levels.” Interest in home schooling seems to be on the rise in
Vernon County.
Recently, Gromer hosted a
preliminary meeting of area home school families. Five mothers
were in attendance, and three were home schooling for the first
time. For Alison, 41, and her husband, Michael, 42, this is year
number 10. “Alison does the bulk of the teaching, and I try to
be very supportive,” said Michael Gromer, a graduate of Kansas
State University who builds and renovates homes. “Sometimes I
have to remind the kids that this is school and mommy is the
teacher: Treat her with respect and honor. You don’t argue with
the teacher.” The Gromers started home schooling when their
oldest child, Mary Beth, 13, was in preschool. “By the time she
was ready for school, I felt I could do a better job at home,”
says Alison, who taught kindergarten for two years in the Blue
Valley schools of Kansas City. “I also felt that the public
school standards in Kansas City were being lowered at the time.”
